The goo that makes us great!
My mom has been tending to wounds with this green goo my entire life! At one point, she had an entire school using it for every-day boo-boo’s and it is such a healthier option than other OTC products. Herbal healing salve is slow-cooked green goodness and has a wide variety of uses.
Its' primary ingredient is plantain. Typically found as a weed, plantain can be abundantly found in some areas and can be emulsified or oil-infused to treat bites, scrapes, cuts, rashes, and more! Plantain leaves found in the wild can actually be rubbed together and immediately applied to a bite or sting to soothe burning and calm redness immediately. Plantain is a miraculous herb, especially for skin-related issues. Plantain is useful for stopping bleeding and promotes the healing of wounds and other injuries
The next wonder herb is comfrey. Comfrey’s common name is knitbone because it promotes the healing of broken bones. It also helps stop hemorrhaging and bleeding. Comfrey is the king of all herbs for rapid wound and bone healing. The allantoin in comfrey increases cell growth, which accounts for its rapid-healing powers.
Other medicinal herbs found in herbal healing salve are:
· St. John’s Wort- a flowering plant traditionally used for anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant applications
· Calendula- uses flavonoids to deliver strong anti-inflammatory properties and it smells amazing!
· Beeswax- known anti-viral, provides protective layer on the skin while still allowing it to breathe. Beeswax is known for soothing temporary itching and often used in skin care products for those who suffer from dry skin itching or sensitive skin. Because beeswax is anti-allergenic, it is also easily tolerated by even those with reactive skin.
· Olive oil- provides gentle and safe skin moisturization and is rich in vitamins
· Lavender oil- has anti-inflammatory properties. Can also be used to aid with anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness.
While there are many ways to infuse all the herbs into the olive oil, I prefer to slow cook over low heat for an entire day. Any infused salve should have the color and smell of the herbs. Our family has used healing salve for 20 years, and everyone carries a small tin in their purse, diaper bag or car. I’m serious when I say, you can use this salve for any sort of skin injury that comes along. We have put it on people, goats, donkeys, dogs, cats, babies, and birds. It is lick-safe, hypoallergenic and has such a variety of uses!
This salve is a must have in every herbal medicine cabinet!
